Line + Shape / Play

The objective of this project is to investigate line and shape while incorporating the directed concept of play.Students will print out black and white, high-resolution copies of drawings/images found online and/or photocopied from print sources that relate to play. Many images will be printed to build a large collection to work with. Interesting pieces will be cut out of each image, with ultimately 3-5 small pieces being selected. The selection of images will then be spaced out onto a piece of RENDR paper and glued down. The composition will then evolve as students begin to fill the spaces in between, using only light pencil and mimicking the marks along the edges of the glued images. The remaining space will be filled with images and patterns that relate to the concept of play, resulting in a coherent yet lively visual composition. After the composition is drawn out, students will trace over the lines and shapes with black marker. Students will turn in 1 11”x14” piece.

Color + Texture / Protest

The objective of this project is to investigate color and simulated texture while incorporating the directed concept of protest. Students will start by collecting images and will create two 5.5”x7” collages dedicated to a cause the student is passionate about. Successful parts of the collage will then be recreated in a faux weave composition. The piece must include text and will include representational and/or non-objective imagery. Color systems and simulated texture will be employed to create the look of a weaving using only marker. This project will utilize 1 piece of RENDR paper. Students will use their sketchbook and collages to plan ideas and experiment with color mixing and then share with their peers before beginning. Each composition must be drawn out in pencil before becoming permanent with marker. This project will be graded based on student’s active practice in artmaking and discussion, demonstration of progressive knowledge of techniques and concept, and completion of the project by the due date. Students will turn in 1 11”x14” piece.

PROJECT 3: Shape + Color / Identity

The objective of this project is to investigate shape and color while considering the directed concept of identity. Students will start by creating two 4”x6” collages, one based on the primary self and the other based on an alter ego, or secondary self. From these collages, the composition will be abstracted into basic shapes and colors. Utilizing a Nōtan technique, color, shape, and figure-ground reversal will be investigated. The resulting Nōtan compositions will then be translated to the RENDR paper where low relief will be explored. The final compositions will utilize approximately 5 pieces of RENDR paper with collaged pieces of cut paper colored with marker and incisions in the paper to reveal layers of color underneath. Students will use their sketchbook and collage to plan ideas and share with their peers before beginning. Each composition must be drawn out in pencil before becoming permanent with marker and incisions. This project will be graded based on student’s active practice in artmaking and discussion, demonstration of progressive knowledge of techniques and concept, and completion of the project by the due date. Students will turn in 2 11”x14” pieces.

Texture + Space / Place

The objective of this project is to investigate texture and space while incorporating the directed concept of place. Students will create 2 compositions, with 1 dedicated to the concept of utopia and the other to dystopia. Each composition must include an element of representational space and use hand-pressed low relief blind embossment for texture. This project will utilize 2 pieces of RENDR paper. Students will use their sketchbook to plan ideas and share with their peers before beginning. This project will be graded based on student’s active practice in artmaking and discussion, demonstration of progressive knowledge of techniques and concept, and completion of the project by the due date. Students will turn in 2 11”x14” pieces.

Collaboration / Consumption

The objective of this project is to work collaboratively and bring together all the elements discussed in this course while incorporating the directed concepts of consumption and branding. This project will be a collaborative effort with 2 students to a team. Each team will create a series of 5 posters for a company picnic ala Steve Frykholm with a Barbara Kruger twist. The company should be one that is not already in existence and must produce a product of some kind. Each team must decide what tone the posters will set and how that relates back to the company’s brand. What will be consumed, both literally and subliminally, through strategic placement of symbols and messages? The posters should showcase a cohesive color scheme and typography. This project will utilize approximately 3 pieces of RENDR paper from each member of the team. Students will use their sketchbook to plan ideas and share their concept with their peers before beginning. Each aspect must be drawn out in pencil before becoming permanent with marker. This project will be graded based on student’s active practice in artmaking and discussion, ability to work successfully as a design team, demonstration of progressive knowledge of techniques and concept, and completion of the project by the due date.
