ARTIST AS TEACHER
While demonstrating expertise in a variety of media and concepts, students should develop artistic ideas and strategies for conceptualizing and planning projects. Beyond technical knowledge, students should create portfolios that address potential as artists, researchers, teachers, and community leaders.
Students can create a work of art with media and a big idea of their choosing but also develop a lesson plan that they can teach. This contributes to portfolios and gives exposure to a possible career prospect.
Watch the video below from The Art Assignment for an example of how an artist might create an lesson that relates to their own work. Artist Sonya Clark applies the techniques of textile work to represent her personal and cultural history. Her assignment draws on her insightful approach to histories and asks viewers to represent their own.
