Design for Exhibitions

Curation is a passion of mine that is rooted in my fascination with how things work - taking things apart, examining the inner workings, and reassembling. I have organized over 50 exhibitions and I learn something new with each one. This practice is essential for keeping me curious in all aspects of my creative life. It continually reinforces that there are infinite ways of making and methods of expression in the world. Creating the materials used to promote an exhibition is an act of curation as well. It involves examining the inner workings of the artist’s process and their motivations and then contextualizing the work to tell a story. Figuring out just the right balance of typography, information, color, and image is a never ending quest but one that never ceases to excite and invigorate me. Through good design, audiences should feel called to act - in this case, support and advocate for the artists exhibiting their work. Design should be economical and not give more information than what is needed. Design should enhance an experience, not overshadow it. But perhaps most importantly, good design should compel audiences to think creatively themselves.
