Typography | Student Work

Type is measured and described in a language that is unique to the world of the printed word. Many typographic terms have their roots in the days when type was set in metal (typewriter, early printing press, etc.). Typographic nomenclature can be divided into two categories: terms that identify typographic forms and terms associated with sizing and adjusting type. Typesetting is the way that text is composed using individual type and the symbols, letters, and glyphs in digital systems. An understanding of fonts, corresponding font sizes, and line spacing is crucial in the design world. Good typesetting and typography is invisible as it allows readers to enjoy the font without interruption or accessibility issues. Bad typesetting draws attention to itself and distracts a reader. The student work seen here are exemplars in my Typography course. Each project focused on learning the language of type, how type can clarify a message’s intent, and how designers can provide accessibility to audiences with varying abilities. Typography is all about not just what is said but how it is said.
